Unique Communication Method

There are different ways people use to express their opinions and emotions. Verbal communication is one of them. One of the good examples is participate in class. Other way which people can express their feeling can be through writing. The creation of blog assignment for the class is a way we can voice our opinion about the activities we did in class. I found the assignments interesting. The idea of blog is a new thing for me. This is the first time that I had been introducing to such resources.
The feeling is really amazing. Back to the topic, communication, my reactions are usually slow in turns of absorbing the information and provide a response. This gave me a disadvantage in terms of participating in class. I like to take my time to think about the possible solutions. With that in mind, my ideas were usually too late to be expressed. But with the existence of blog assignments, I can still express myself. Writing blog entries help me know my classmates better.
In terms of relating class experiences with the lessons we studying, I am not totally agree with that. The assignments I did for my blog, my focus is on the topic itself, class experiences, and with my own personal opinions. The entries in Professor’s website are very interesting. They gave me new ideas that I can work on toward my future. In the future, I think I will definitely post updates about my life.
As of now, I think blog is what makes the whole course complete. One suggestion for the future class, give each student one freebee. What I mean is, out of the seven regular assignments we did in class. You can set the requirement to six. For those we did all seven you can give some bonus points. I said this because there were times that I had difficulty writing up my blog entries.

McDonalds Adventure

It was a sunny Sunday afternoon, when my friend and I went to our local McDonald to seek out the adventure. The store I went is located at 75-50 101st Ave. Ozone Park, NY 11416.
We arrived at the storefront around 11:20am. We noticed that there were a lot of people inside eating; that got us a little nervous. We entered the store, where the waiting lines were divided into three registers. I picked the longest line out of the three. While I was waiting for my turn, I realized that there was no Dollar Menu on the screen. I was so disappointed, but I still wanted to give it a try. It turned out lunch would be served at noon. We were approximately half an hour early.
My friend and I sat down at the closest table and waited for noon to come. We talked about different strategies we should use to convince the employee to print out the receipt with the requirements on it.
At the time they changed the menu, I went on the line again and waited patiently for my turn. Just as the cashier finished with the customer ahead of me and called for the next customer, I stepped up and politely approached her before I gave her my order. I told her that I wanted a cheeseburger with four pickles only and a small well done frenchfries without salt. I put a strong emphasis that I wanted my receipt to have exactly what I ordered. After I said that, she redid the contents of the receipt by pointing at her register’s touch screen. After I confirmed with her that she had the things I wanted to be there on the receipt, I paid her. When we got the receipt, my friend and I looked it over for any incomplete information. We realized that she didn’t put four pickles on the receipt. Instead, she only had “1 add $ pickle.” We know the professor is not going to accept the receipt, so we went back to the register and told her we wanted “4 add $ pickles” on the receipt. She said that she couldn’t do it and offered me the opportunity to talk to her manager. I said ok. Then her expression and attitude turned sour.
While she went to bring her manager over, I overheard a conversation at the other register where there was an old man who also ordered frenchfries without salt. At that point, I realized that well-done fries without salt is a common order they do in that store. After the cashier brought her manager over, I told him that I wanted my receipt to have four pickles printed on it. During the process of negotiation, the manager was professional and very reasonable. I didn’t receive any attitude from him. After a lengthy conversation, he told me he would print me another receipt with “add $” appearing four times on that receipt. I accepted the option.
While I was waiting for my order, I saw him go into the kitchen to tell the employee that I wanted four pickles. I didn’t hear any negative comments from the employee, nor did anyone look at me from the kitchen. After I waited for ten minutes, I was tempted to ask them about my order. The cashier at one point tries to assist me, but she gave up before I told her that I was still waiting for my order. I had feeling that I had ruined her day. During that process, the manager was walking around the back and front, taking care of other customers.
After the food is ready, the manager brought the food over and handed it to the cashier. He also reminded her that she should give me ketchup. It took two people to handle my order and the whole process took five people. One person made the burger, one person made the fries, one person brought the food over and two people handled the order. The whole process took around fifteen minutes. Finally, I reanalyzed the stuff and everything was perfect.
Over all, I am very satisfied with the service the manager provided me with. The only thing that needed improvement were the cashiers in the front. Out of the three cashiers, I didn’t see anyone smiling. They should pay more attention when they handle special orders and listen to what the customer is asking for and try their best to provide what the customers want.

High I High S

After the class exercise, I found out the result for my DISC assessment test was High I and High S. I stands for Influence, which means relating to social situations and communication. S stands for Steadiness, which means relating to patience, persistence, and thoughtfulness. All of the above descriptions are from the Wikipedia. As both I and S combine, the personality would be highly influential toward other people in a silent way. I think it is some what true toward my personality. I am the type of person who would provide suggestions for other, but I will not force them to follow.
I believed this exercise gave me another perspective of looking at different managerial types. It helped me to expand my understanding of different types of people in the managerial position.

Avoidance

During the entire class discussion, I would categorize myself to be Avoidance. At the being, I was thinking of participating in the discussion, but I found that there were so many people try really hard to get their ideas out. I found it hard to get my point of view across. Slowly, I became a listener; I want to hear what everyone thinks. As time passed by, there were couple good ideas came out, but wasn’t the ideal answer which can satisfy everyone. At this point, our very low influence Leader came out again, and then we finalized everything according the each category. I feel satisfy for the final result even though I didn’t do any participation.
The only thing I think that we can improve is time management, but I also believed the great ideas always came out last. Professor gave us total of around 35 minutes to finish this task. I think we should use two minutes to think about what we really looking for in each category. And then, we can use twenty minutes to gather all the information from all the classmates. We still have thirteen minutes left, so we can use eight minutes to finalize the whole results and two minutes to do the first voting. That left us with three minutes which we might need for other adjustment in case the first vote didn’t go through for the whole class.

"Just Do it "

Our team names our egg: “Just Do It.” The whole activity is very interesting and fun. At the beginning of the activity, our team emerged a leader which came up with some cushion form of protection design. The whole protection design is going to cover only 50% of the egg. We worried about the other 50% of the egg. There are couple problems that we discover about the design. For example, what if the egg landed and bounce to the other side, the side without protection. After couple suggestions, we decided to use 1/5 of the straw as a protection to the side, so that will limit some bouncing effect for the cushion design. Once we had finalized our design, we created step by step process to create the design.

During the implement phase, one of our team members had scissor with her, so fighting for the only scissor is not a concern for our group. This gave us the full team power to focus. Professor told us that we are only going to get eight straws and one egg. For the one and only one egg, we had a team member whose only responsibility is to hold the egg. There are two people cutting the straws and the tape. Our leader is making the triangle cushion protection. Everyone of us took a responsibility in this activity. Even though we didn’t succeed at the end, but it was a fun exercise for all our members.

Problem: Time Management

Time management is a huge problem for me. This is because it is very difficult for me to get out of my house until it is the last minute. I can wake up two hours ago and leave at the same time when I wake up thirty minutes ago. After leaving the house, things will turn out to be better. Usually, I will do a daily planning to compensate my bad time management skill. Sometimes, it is not helpful because there is an old saying in Chinese culture, “planning can never catch up with changing.” I truly agree with this proverb. There are times, I had my schedule planned out perfectly, but there will be obstruction came out to destroy the plan. At that point, I will need to adjust my plan to find alternatives to make up the hours I lost. I really need some advice in regarding of this skill. HELPPPPPPPPPP!!!!
